What Size Is a 4 in Ted Baker Dresses
I've said a few times now how during lockdown I went a little bit 'all fur coat and no knickers' and got a little obsessed with ordering Ted Baker stuff online. Predominantly second hand I may add, but a few times I did treat myself to some sale items from the TB website. I've never been much of a follower of 'you buy cheap, you buy twice' especially when it comes to clothes; I'm a quantity over quality type of gal. But Ted Baker is the brand that's the exception that proves the rule. There's one thing that has been a bit of a bone of contention over the last year or so, and that's their sizing structure.
But never fear, here I am to explain it all (a less stylish version of Clarissa, if you will) because it's been a bit of trial and error getting the right sizes in Ted Baker clothes.
Here's the size chart from their website which feels like a good place to start:
As you can see, they haven't conformed to the standard 10 12 14 structure. Not that those numbers mean much any more anyway, I have sizes ranging from 10 to 16 in my wardrobe, which all fit me the same way. But Ted Baker have decided to go with the way less conventional 1, 2, 3 etc.
Now. I consider myself someone who's quite in tune with my own sizing. I know what tends to fit me from which shops, so that makes online shopping so much easier. According to the chart I should fall somewhere between a size 3 and a 4. But are they're sizes accurate?
In my experience. Yes. In fact if anything, they're on the generous side, which is unusual for a more expensive brand. For example, I have many jumpers which are a size 3 and I would say are a good UK 12/14. Blouses are also on the generous side so depending on the fit I have them in either a 3 or in one instance a 2
Dresses, similarly I feel a 3 is a good 12/14, albeit probably erring more on the 12 size than the 14. But again, I have a couple of Ted Baker dresses all in a 3 and they fit me well. More often than not I need to opt for a size 14 in dresses, especially if they are a tighter fitting pencil style. So I like that I a 3 in Ted Baker fits 99% of the time.
The bottom half is a whole other ball game though, although I think I have it sussed now. For skirts and non-jean type trousers, a size 4 is perfect for me and akin to a UK 14, which is what I would wear on the bottom anyway. Jeans however I've struggled with a little more. I ordered a part of textured jeans from Vinted in December, which were sold as a Ted Baker 4, therefore should have been a 14 and should have fit fine, however when they arrived were sized 32 inches, which had I known I wouldn't have bought as I would have known they would be too tight. So be very careful with jeans I would say. In my experience, a 34 inch waist is like a 14, but in Ted Baker world, that would mean a size 5. That's the only anomaly I've found.
The whole thing is annoying though and I've often wised there was a standard size range across all shops and countries. That said, mens trousers, for example, which are supposed to be a standard measurement, are all over the place too and Dave often trousers to find consistent sizes for jeans and trousers. It's a bloody minefield!
